Last week, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gave a speech that upset many people, especially those in the autism community. During his remarks, he said that autism "destroys families" and described children with autism as unable to work, play, write, or even use the bathroom without help. His comments were widely criticized for being hurtful and untrue.
Actress and autism advocate Holly Robinson Peete was among the first to speak out. Holly is the proud mom of a 27-year-old son named RJ, who was diagnosed with autism at age three. She posted a video on Instagram calling Kennedy’s comments "triggering," "ignorant," and "completely false."
Holly shared that while raising a child with autism can come with challenges, it is also filled with love, growth, and hope. She reminded everyone that people with autism are capable of amazing things. Her son RJ has held a job and continues to grow and thrive.
Holly was also the first African American to sit on the board of Autism Speaks, and she has been a strong voice for autism awareness and acceptance for years. She clarified that all children deserve to be seen for their potential, not dismissed by harmful stereotypes.
